Toy Therapy: THRILLER “Werecat” Figure

The video THRILLER probably had as much to do with my chosen career path as anything else – Maybe even as much as STAR WARS. However unlike STAR WARS, there are really no THRILLER action figures that a fan like myself can decorate his shelves with. So, like any tinkerer, I decided to make one…

Being a toy designer, this wasn’t a technically difficult project. I decided to go with the 70s MEGO style, due to the scale being a fun one, and the availability of parts / clothing at reasonable prices.

The first  step was sculpting the head.  I did a digital sculpt in Maya and Mudbox, and had it printed on an Objet 3d PRINTER

While I was waiting for the print to arrive, I purchased the MEGO body and clothing from an online store.

Test fitting!  The jacket would be taken apart and used as a template to create the proper colored version!

The next step was painting the face – I wanted it to look good, but also look “vintage”  so I didn’t do a ton of subtle shading.

After that it was simply pushing the head into the MEGO torso and assembling the rest of the outfit. The project was totally straight forward, but to this day is one of my favorite projects!
